Cycling Opinions on SRAM?

My old school Trek U.S. Postal Service OCLV bike got stolen out of my garage a couple of weeks ago, which is a bummer. But it's got me thinking about a new bike, which is fun. My thoughts are starting to gel around a Cannondale Synapse with SRAM Rival. I've never ridden SRAM stuff, so I don't know how well it works. I'm curious to hear any opinions out there.
I definitely don't want to spend the $5,500 to replace my 1999 Dura-Ace 8-speed with the latest, greatest. I haven't raced for 12 years, and it's not in my future. But I could be persuaded to go with Ultegra. It's something like a $600 step up on the Cannondale (including some other upgraded components). Does any one out there with experience using Rival want to sound off?
